STATEMENT FROM THE VIRGIN ISLANDS WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY ON RECENT ARSON INCIDENT

(U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS) The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) condemns in the strongest terms the recent arson that destroyed garbage trucks and essential heavy equipment belonging to a critical vendor contracted to address the backlog of house-to-house garbage collection on St. Croix. This unacceptable and unfortunate act demonstrates a blatant disregard for the rule of law, the livelihoods of hardworking individuals, and the well-being of the St. Croix community.

This malicious act has disrupted critical services and undermined efforts to restore timely waste collection for our residents. We are working closely with law enforcement and other agencies to support the investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

VIWMA remains committed to overcoming this setback and fulfilling our mission of providing reliable waste management services for the Virgin Islands. We urge the community to remain vigilant and united as we address this matter together.

VIWMA ADVISES THE COMMUNITY OF A SEWER LINE INSTALLATION OF #53 KING STREET/QUEEN CROSS

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) advises the community that on Monday December 2, 2024, the sewer line at #53 King Street (commercial complex), Christiansted town, will be replaced (new lateral/service sewer line installation).

On the date when the sewer line is being installed, vehicular parking will not be allowed from King Street/Queen Cross Street to Queen Cross Street/Strand Street. Traffic, including Service vehicles, going to:

1. Christiansted Boardwalk, Comanche Hotel, Caravelle Casino should take Watergut Street to Watergut Street/King Cross Street and then park in the Government Parking Lot (corner of King Cross Street/Strand Street)

Pedestrian traffic will be limited to the sidewalk on the west side of Queen Cross Street.

Due to WAPA underground secondary electrical power conduits located in the vicinity of the lateral/service sewer line installation, WAPA has informed VIWMA that an electrical power outage will be required. The power outage is VIWMA safety protocol when excavation is occurring around the secondary electrical power conduits.

The VIWMA staff apologizes for the inconvenience and thanks the community for their patience and cooperation.
