Landfill Operating Polices

The Territory’s landfills and transfer station are managed by the Authority to meet local and federal rules and regulations for compliance.

The Susannaberg Landfill on St. John was closed in the early 1990’s when an underground fire was discovered and extinguished. This facility now operates as a transfer station, as the solid waste on St. John is collected from the many disposal sites (bin sites) located strategically around St. John for residents to dispose of their household waste. The waste is then taken to the Susannaberg Transfer Station, compacted and then barged to St. Thomas where it is transported to the Bovoni Landfill on the southeastern end of St. Thomas for disposal.

The Bovoni Landfill on St. Thomas and the Anguilla Landfill on St. Croix are currently manned by both the Authority’s staff and a contracted operator, A-9 Trucking Enterprises. St. Thomas currently has 22 disposal sites and St. Croix has only 2 bin sites. These landfills accept household waste from disposal sites, house-to-house collection abd directly at the landfills. These landfills also allow for the diversion of scrap metal (including vehicles, appliances and metal building materials) to be recycled.
