Press Releases

(ST. THOMAS) August 29, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team, on St. Thomas, has repaired a sewage overflow in the area of the Moravian Gut.  Assessment of the area began on Monday, but work was suspended Wednesday as Hurricane Dorian passed over the Virgin Islands.

On Thursday, VIWMA engineers reported the assigned contractor has fixed the sewage overflow.  The contractor continues to work on extending the current bypass lines beyond the impacted area. The current four-inch (4”) bypass will be replaced with a larger six-inch (6”) bypass which will reduce future blockages.  At the conclusion of the work, the area will be washed and disinfected.

The Authority reminds the public they can do their part in preserving paradise by reporting wastewater concerns or solid waste violation by calling our hot line at 844-WMA-USVI (844-962-8784). (St. Croix, USVI) August 15, 2019 – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise contractors have resolved the sewage overflow that affected a section of Hospital Street in Frederiksted. The area has been washed down, disinfected, and is now safe for pedestrians and vehicles to traverse.

On Friday, August 9, the VIWMA Wastewater staff discovered a clogged manhole which prevented the flow of sewage and caused an overflow. Attempts to clear the blockage were unsuccessful at that time. On Tuesday, a manhole, which was buried during a previous paving project was uncovered. Extreme methods were required to remove the blockage, according to the Crew Supervisor. Crews worked to stop the bypass and traffic cones were placed to cordon off the affected area.

The Authority thanks the residents who called our hot line at 844-WMA-USVI (844-962- 8784) to report the sewage overflow. The VIWMA encourages residents to do their part in preserving paradise by reporting any wastewater concerns or solid waste violation.

(USVI) August 27, 2019 - In preparation for impending Tropical Storm Dorian which will impact the Territory Wednesday and Thursday, the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) Preserving Paradise Team is advising contracted solid waste haulers to commence multiple hauls to remove solid waste or other disposed items in the vicinity of current bin sites. These items may become potential windblown hazards as wind speed increases; additionally, the areas around the bin sites should always be debris free by the contracted haulers.

The community is urged to properly dispose of solid waste at the bin site, making sure to place refuse inside of the bins.

The VIWMA Preserving Paradise team urges the community to be safe and be prepared during this hurricane season.

(St. Croix, USVI) August 1, 2019 – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team, Interim Executive Director Adrian Wade Taylor, on Thursday, took steps to mitigate road conditions inside the Anguilla landfill that were hazardous for solid waste haulers. Ongoing inclement weather caused a three-day temporary closure at the facility which adversely affected the St. Croix public.

“The slope inside the landfill was slippery and posed a hazard to contractors who were attempting maneuver their trucks to dispose of the municipal solid waste they collected”, said Taylor.  The Authority purchased gravel and applied it to the road, stabilizing the area and allowing more than 15 haulers to drop off their loads at the facility on Thursday.  Solid waste was picked up from the Cotton Valley, Mon Bijou and Concordia bin sites.

The Authority thanked the public for their patience while Waste Management addressed this issue.  “The safety of our contractors is paramount,” Taylor said, “as well as providing the best service possible to the public.”
