(St. Croix, USVI) – October 10, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that the fire which was reported on Tuesday October 8 at Anguilla Landfill has been suppressed and normal operations have resumed as of 1pm Wednesday, October 9. The Landfill stands ready to accept commercial and public Solid Waste including metals, however no green waste will be accepted at this time.

Haulers contracted to collect commercial solid waste, household waste, as well as waste from public bin sites have also resumed normal operations. The public is asked to exercise patience as there may be slight collection delays with house to house pickups. Haulers are asked to exercise caution at the landfill and follow the instructions of the landfill personnel.

(US Virgin Islands) October 7, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA or the Authority) reminds all business owners they must employ a permitted hauler or become a permitted hauler to dispose of their waste. This is according to VI Code Title 19 Chapter 56 § 1555 (e) and (b).

It is illegal for any business to dispose their commercial waste at public bin sites. All commercial waste must be transported to the landfills.

The Authority is authorized to issue permits for commercial waste collection and transportation, provided the applicant meets all lawful requirements. Failure to obtain a permit will result in a fine of $1,000.00 for each offense, imprisonment for up to180 days, or both.

To complete a permitted hauler application, or to obtain a list of permitted haulers, call VIWMA at 340-715-9100 on St. Thomas, 340-774-2141 on St. John or 340-712-4962 on St. Croix.

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (‘VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that the Virgin Islands Fire Service, VIWMA contractors and personnel continue to work diligently to suppress the fire reported at the Anguilla Landfill on Tuesday October 8 at approximately 9:55 a.m.

The Authority advises the public and all solid waste haulers that the Anguilla Landfill is currently closed to minimize disruption to fire suppression activities.

Residents and commercial haulers are asked to refrain from accessing the Landfill until normal operating hours resume. The Authority will continue to provide updates that may affect public health, the environment, and haulers utilizing the Anguilla Landfill.

Residents with respiratory disorders/conditions should take precautions to minimize their exposure to smoke as wind directions change.

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (‘VIWMA” or“Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community of an active fire at theAnguilla Landfill reported Tuesday, October 8 at about 9:55 a.m. The Virgin Islands FireService (VIFS) firefighters were on the scene at about 10:15 a.m.

The fire is located on the east side of the landfill in the area where household andcommercial waste is deposited. Firefighters and VIWMA personnel are workingexpeditiously to bring the fire under control. VIWMA advises the public and all haulersthat landfill operations have been temporarily suspended. Haulers are asked to holdwaste until normal operating hours resume.
