(St. Croix, USVI) July 24, 2019 – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team responded to a residents’ concern of a possible sewer leak in Frederiksted on Monday, July 22.  Wastewater crews were dispatched; however, the situation was abated by the time the crews arrived at the scene. As of Wednesday morning, conditions at the location remain stable, with no sewage overflow.

 

Wastewater reported on Monday that a manhole in the vicinity of King Street and King Cross Street did overflow but did not currently pose a safety hazard. VIWMA crews continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis.

 

The VIWMA would like to thank the concerned citizen whom reported the leak. The Authority encourages the public to take an active role in preserving paradise by reporting wastewater or solid waste related emergencies territory wide; including sewer spills, illegal dumping and service interruptions.

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) Preserving Paradise team advises the community and solid waste haulers of slippery conditions on the alternate route utilized to access the top of the landfill.

 

Conditions will cause some delays; haulers are reminded to exercise extreme caution to ensure the safety of all.  The Authority is asking drivers to be patient with the disposal of waste.

(St. Thomas, USVI) – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority Preserving Paradise team informs the St. Thomas community of the Authority’s ongoing measures to mitigate the effects of the sewage flow affecting the homes and businesses in the vicinity of the Savan Gut.  The Authority has performed temporary repairs, will begin point repairs, and has developed specifications to address permanent repairs to the hurricane damaged sewer lines.

 

VIWMA contractors are presently working in the upper Savan Gut area performing point repairs, removing debris at the location and disinfecting the area as needed. There is another breach downstream of the bridge near the Romeo Malone Community Center. Point repairs are scheduled at that location and the temporary work is anticipated to be completed within two weeks.

 

Updates will be provided as the repairs progress. The Authority apologizes to the public for the inconvenience caused and asks for continued patience as we work to resolve the problems.  Do not hesitate to contact the Authority at (340)712-4962.

(St. Thomas, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that due to limited holding and processing space, junk, and abandoned vehicles will not be accepted at the Bovoni Landfill at this time.

 

The Authority will continue to provide updates as space becomes available and when collection and processing resumes.

 (St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that the Anguilla Landfill Scrap Metal Section fire remains under control.  The Virgin Islands Fire Service (VIFS), VIWMA contractors and personnel continue to monitor the situation, as minor smoldering continues, little to no smoke is being emitted. 

 

The Authority has resumed the collection of municipal solid waste, solely.  Solid waste is currently being diverted from the Transfer Station to an alternate location at the landfill.   

 

There will be general waste collection delays due to solid waste collection back log.  Haulers are asked to please take safety seriously and follow the instructions of the landfill personnel.  

 

The Authority will continue to provide updates that may affect public health, the environment and haulers utilizing the landfill.
