(St. Croix, USVI) September 25, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) Preserving Paradise team advises the community and solid waste haulers that the Anguilla Landfill is closed due to deteriorated road conditions caused by the recent passage of Tropical Storm Karen.

 

In the interim, haulers are reminded to hold waste. The Authority will continue to provide updates as road conditions improve.

 (VIRGIN ISLANDS) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the public that all VIWMA administrative offices and facilities will be open today.

 

VIWMA administrative offices will be open from 8am to 5pm. The collection of municipal solid waste has resumed, all solid waste disposal facilities are open until 4:00pm. There may be general waste collection delays due to weather conditions; haulers are asked to please take safety precautions.

 

The Authority continues to monitor the weather; adjustments to operating hours will be communicated timely.

 

The VIWMA Preserving Paradise team would like to thank the community for their continued patience and cooperation.

(VIRGIN ISLANDS) September 23, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team issues the following advisory to the public in anticipation of Tropical Storm Karen which will impact the Territory Tuesday, September 24, 2019

 

SOLID WASTE

  • All contractors have been advised to commence multiple hauls to remove solid waste and other disposed items in the vicinity of current bin sites
  • Landfills will operate on their regular schedules as weather permits
  • Landfills on St. Thomas and St. Croix is scheduled to close 4 pm Monday
  • The Landfill on St. John closed 2 pm Monday.

 

WASTE WATER

  • Residents are advised that the wastewater system may be surcharged due to inclement weather caused by Tropical Storm Karen. Residents are advised to avoid ponding water near manholes and exercise caution while driving or walking on flooded roads.

 

VIWMA STAFF

  • All VIWMA staff are all designated as essential and are instructed to follow the directions of their supervisors regarding their emergency work schedules.

(USVI) September 24, 2019 – As the territory experiences the effects of Tropical Storm Karen currently affecting the Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) Preserving Paradise Partners issues the following advisories:

  • VIWMA Offices and Solid Waste facilities will remain closed today
  • Residents are asked to hold their solid waste until the storm has passed and the facilities have been reopened
  • The wastewater collection system will be surcharged due to inclement weather; residents are advised to avoid ponding water near manholes and exercise caution while driving or walking in flooded areas.

  • Staff are designated as essential and are instructed to follow the directions of their supervisors regarding their emergency work schedules.

(ST. THOMAS) September 20, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team on St. Thomas, advises the public the disposal of metals at the Bovoni Landfill is suspended until further notice.

 

Residents are asked to hold on to their metals until the Authority revokes the suspension.  Please do not illegally dump your metals or any other disposable items.  Do your part to help preserve paradise!
