Press Releases

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (‘VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that the Anguilla Landfill on St. Croix will be closed to the public on Monday, January 06, 2020, due to continued fire suppression activities taking place at the site.

Solid waste haulers are advised that bin site and house to house refuse will be accepted at the Transfer Station while the top of the landfill will remain closed to minimize disruption to fire suppression activities.

The fire was reported at 2:30 am Sunday, January 05, 2020. The Virgin Islands Fire Service, VIWMA contractors and personnel continue to work diligently to suppress the fire which is located on the southeast corner of the landfill.

The Authority will continue to provide updates on this situation. Residents with respiratory disorders/conditions should take precautions to minimize their exposure to smoke as wind directions change.

The VIWMA Preserving Paradise team apologizes for the inconvenience and would like to thank the community for their continued patience and cooperation.

(St. Thomas) The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority Preserving Paradise Team (VIWMA) advises the public work has started to replace a section of sewer line in Estate Ann’s Retreat. The collapsed sewer line crosses the road to The Valley and requires the contractors to excavate both lanes of traffic. Vehicles must detour around the area during the day. Road plates will be installed at the end of the day to facilitate the flow of traffic. The work began on December 10; the line replacement is expected to be completed by December 16. The road will be resurfaced following the repairs.

The section of sewer line being replaced has been in use for more than 40 years, according to the contractor. That original, decayed, clay pipe is being replaced by an SDR pipe designed specifically for sewer services.

The VIWMA Preserving Paradise Team continues to work diligently to provide the information the community needs as well as reliable solid waste and waste water services. We would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation. (St. Thomas VI) The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority Preserving Paradise team announces that the Nadir Hill community will join with the thousands of other households in the Territory who receive  house-to-house municipal solid waste collection.  The Authority will close and remove the small 8-yard bin site in the area effective November 26th and house to house collection will begin on Monday, December 2, with collections every Monday thereafter.

If your home is scheduled for house-to-house collection, please note you are allowed a maximum of two (2) 64-gallon trash receptacles placed curbside.  In the case of apartment buildings up to 4 (four) units, you are allowed a maximum of one (1) 64-gallon receptacle per unit.

For buildings with more than 4 (four) units including commercial and industrial structures, owners are reminded, the law requires them to utilize a private permitted and licensed waste hauler to collect and dispose waste. It is a criminal offence to dispose commercial or business waste  at a public bin site. Citations for this unlawful behavior begins at $1,000 per violation.

The VIWMA requests all residents to please prepare your household waste properly for disposal. Place your household waste in a sealed bag, place it in a securely closed receptacle. Also, clean and sanitize your receptacles regularly.

Residents who dispose of sharp items, such as diabetic testing or insulin needles, please place your sharps in a plastic container before putting it in the household trash.  When disposing of household cooking oil, place the cooled oil in a securely covered container before putting it in your household waste.
