VIWMA TRANSFER STATION AND LANDFILL ARE TEMPORARILY CLOSED

(ST. CROIX, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) Preserving Paradise team advises the St. Croix community of the St. Croix Transfer Station and Anguilla Landfill closure. The Facilities are temporarily closed today, Monday, October 15, 2018 due to heavy smoke caused by a fire which started in the mulch pile at the entrance of the facility on Sunday, October 14, 2018.

The Virgin Islands Fire Service, VIWMA contractors and staff are working expeditiously to bring the fire under control. We are asking residents to hold bulky waste at home; the public and all haulers are asked to hold waste until normal operating hours resume. The VIWMA will provide updates on any changes that may affect the public and haulers utilizing the Solid Waste Facilities.

It is recommended that residents with respiratory disorders/conditions shelter in place to minimize exposure to smoke as wind directions change. The Authority will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health and the environment.

The VIWMA Preserving Paradise Team continues to work diligently to provide reliable services and would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation.
