VIWMA TRANSITIONS TO STANDARDIZED TRASH CARTS
(St. Croix, USVI) – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) advises residents of ongoing safety concerns caused by non-standard trash carts.
Many of these containers are rusted, rotted, or damaged, making them unsafe and difficult for sanitation crews to handle, especially when filled with water or heavy waste. These conditions pose a serious risk of injury and increased strain on our frontline staff.
As part of an effort to improve safety and efficiency, non-standard trash carts will soon be phased out and no longer accepted for House-to-House collection. Residents are urged to transition to a standardized trash cart with a maximum capacity of 64-gallons that meets VIWMA’s safety guidelines. Approved carts are available through VIWMA and other authorized retailers.
To ensure uninterrupted waste collection service:
- Use an approved, standardized trash cart no larger than 64-gallons
- Keep trash carts clean and ensure all bags are secured to prevent spills
- Ensure the trash cart lid can be fully closed
