VIWMA REMINDS THE PUBLIC TARPS MUST BE USED WHEN TRANSPORTING LOOSE WASTE

(US Virgin Islands) October 21, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA or the Authority) reminds the general public, as well as commercial haulers, to cover loose waste in their personal truck beds and on all commercial vehicles when driving on Virgin Islands’ roads.

According to Virgin Islands Code, Title 19 Chapter 56 § 1563, “No person shall haul or transport loose waste such as paper, rags, ashes or other material of such kind as to be subject to be blown about by the wind or otherwise scattered in such manner as to litter the streets or other public places.”

Failure to comply can result in fines of $ 1,000.00 for each offense or imprisonment for up to 180 days or both.

The VIWMA is imploring our community to do all they can to keep our islands free of litter and trash and join us in our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint.

To report illegal dumping call our hotline at 844-WMA-USVI (844-962-8784).
