(VIRGIN ISLANDS) September 23, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team issues the following advisory to the public in anticipation of Tropical Storm Karen which will impact the Territory Tuesday, September 24, 2019

 

SOLID WASTE

  • All contractors have been advised to commence multiple hauls to remove solid waste and other disposed items in the vicinity of current bin sites
  • Landfills will operate on their regular schedules as weather permits
  • Landfills on St. Thomas and St. Croix is scheduled to close 4 pm Monday
  • The Landfill on St. John closed 2 pm Monday.

 

WASTE WATER

  • Residents are advised that the wastewater system may be surcharged due to inclement weather caused by Tropical Storm Karen. Residents are advised to avoid ponding water near manholes and exercise caution while driving or walking on flooded roads.

 

VIWMA STAFF

  • All VIWMA staff are all designated as essential and are instructed to follow the directions of their supervisors regarding their emergency work schedules.

(ST. THOMAS) September 20, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team on St. Thomas, advises the public the disposal of metals at the Bovoni Landfill is suspended until further notice.

 

Residents are asked to hold on to their metals until the Authority revokes the suspension.  Please do not illegally dump your metals or any other disposable items.  Do your part to help preserve paradise!

(ST. THOMAS) September 4, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team is scheduling a series of Bulk Item Collections.  The first location will be the Triangle in Estate Bordeaux.  The Bulk Item Bin will be dropped off on Friday, September 6 and will be removed on Friday, September 13th.

 

The bin will accommodate bulk items only, such as couches, mattresses, furniture and other large items.  No metals, no appliances, no galvanized, no construction debris and no household waste or everyday trash can be placed in the Bulk Item Bin. 

 

Seniors and physically challenged individuals can fill out a VIWMA service request to have bulk items, white goods, and e-waste removed from their private residences on St. Thomas/St. John by calling the Solid Waste Division at 340-715-4953.

 

Businesses are prohibited from using the Bulk Item Bin including public bin sites; businesses are required, by law, to utilize a licensed and VIWMA permitted waste hauler or take their waste directly to the Bovoni Landfill. Business found using public bins will be fined.

(USVI) August 28, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that storm debris, including green waste, should not be disposed of at the bin sites or convenience centers.  These items must be taken to the landfill for proper disposal.

 

The VIWMA is asking for the community’s cooperation with the placement of various categories of waste in its proper place. This allows the Authority to effectively manage the waste produced.
