BOVONI LANDFILL RESUMES OPERATIONS FOLLOWING SCRAP METALS FIRE

(St. Thomas, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (‘VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community of the resumption of operations  at the Bovoni Landfill beginning Tuesday, June 9 at 6 am.  At this time, only household waste will be accepted; the community is asked to please hold seaweed, green waste and metals until further notice.

The Bovoni Landfill closed on Monday, June 8 at 8:20 am due to an active fire that originated in the metals section.  VIWMA staff and contractors reported metals, including junked cars, were being processed for removal when a vehicle ignited causing the fire.

The fire was suppressed at 6:30 pm with the assistance of the Virgin Islands Fire Service (VIFS), VIWMA staff and contractors Sleepy’s Trucking and A-9.  The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) and St. Thomas Rescue supported the firefighting efforts.

The public is strongly urged to remove engine fluids, batteries and tires from vehicles prior to disposal to prevent accidental fires and protect the environment from spills.
