VIWMA REMINDS BUSINESS OWNERS OF THEIR SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL REQUIREMENTS

(US Virgin Islands) October 7, 2019 - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA or the Authority) reminds all business owners they must employ a permitted hauler or become a permitted hauler to dispose of their waste. This is according to VI Code Title 19 Chapter 56 ยง 1555 (e) and (b).

It is illegal for any business to dispose their commercial waste at public bin sites. All commercial waste must be transported to the landfills.

The Authority is authorized to issue permits for commercial waste collection and transportation, provided the applicant meets all lawful requirements. Failure to obtain a permit will result in a fine of $1,000.00 for each offense, imprisonment for up to180 days, or both.

To complete a permitted hauler application, or to obtain a list of permitted haulers, call VIWMA at 340-715-9100 on St. Thomas, 340-774-2141 on St. John or 340-712-4962 on St. Croix.

The way our local businesses dispose of their waste affects the beauty of our islands and our collective efforts to reduce our environmental footprint. To report illegal dumping call our hotline at 844-WMA-USVI (844-962-8784).
