VIWMA ADVISES THE COMMUNITY OF AN ACTIVE FIRE AT THE ANGUILLA LANDFILL

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (‘VIWMA” or“Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community of an active fire at theAnguilla Landfill reported Tuesday, October 8 at about 9:55 a.m. The Virgin Islands FireService (VIFS) firefighters were on the scene at about 10:15 a.m.

 

The fire is located on the east side of the landfill in the area where household andcommercial waste is deposited. Firefighters and VIWMA personnel are workingexpeditiously to bring the fire under control. VIWMA advises the public and all haulersthat landfill operations have been temporarily suspended. Haulers are asked to holdwaste until normal operating hours resume.

 

Residents with respiratory disorders/conditions should take precautions to minimize theirexposure to smoke as wind directions change. The Authority will continue to provideupdates regarding changes that may affect public health, the environment and haulersutilizing the Landfill.
