VIWMA TRANSFER STATION AND LANDFILL TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO ACTIVE SCRAP METAL FIRE

 

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (‘VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community of an active fire in the Scrap Metal Section at the Anguilla Landfill which was reported today, Sunday, June 30, 2019 at approximately 3:00a.m.


The Virgin Islands Fire Service (VIFS), VIWMA contractors and personnel are on scene; VIFS is currently working to contain and suppress the fire.


The Authority advises the public and all solid waste haulers that the St. Croix Transfer Station and Anguilla Landfill are closed and will not be accepting municipal solid waste until further notice. Temporary closure is required to ensure safety and continued vigorous fire suppression activities.


It is recommended that residents with respiratory conditions shelter in place to minimize exposure to smoke as wind directions change. When necessary, please seek alternate an location until suppression activities have concluded. The Authority will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health, the environment and haulers utilizing the Landfill.
