VIWMA TRANSFER STATION AND LANDFILL TEMPORARILY CLOSED AS ACTIVE FIRE SUPPRESSION CONTINUES

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (‘VIWMA” or “Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that the Virgin Islands Fire Service, Virgin Islands Port Authority, VIWMA contractor and personnel continues to work diligently to suppress the fire reported Sunday, June 23, 2019 at approximately 4:20pm.

The Authority advises the public and all solid waste haulers that the St. Croix Transfer Station and Anguilla Landfill are currently closed; temporary closure is required to ensure safe disposal of waste and to minimize disruption to fire suppression activities.

Residents are asked to practice waste minimization techniques and to hold bulky waste at home; the public and all haulers are asked to hold waste until normal operating hours resumes. The Authority will continue to provide updates that may affect public health, the environment and haulers utilizing the Transfer Station.

It is recommended that residents with respiratory disorders/conditions shelter in place to minimize exposure to smoke as wind directions change.

The VIWMA Preserving Paradise team apologizes for the inconvenience and would like to thank the community for their continued patience and cooperation.
