VIWMA TEAM UPDATES COMMUNITY ON ANGUILLA LANDFILL FIRE SUPPRESSION

 

 

(St. Croix, USVI) - The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (“VIWMA” or“Authority”) Preserving Paradise team advises the community that the fire at the AnguillaLandfill reported at 5:30am on Monday, June 17, 2019 and reignited on Tuesday, June18, 2019 is currently under control. The Virgin Islands Fire Service, VIWMA contractors and personnel will continue to monitor the situation.

 

 

The Authority advises the public and all solid waste haulers that the St. Croix TransferStation and Anguilla Landfill remains closed and will only accept household (bin sites)and government waste at this time.

 

 

Residents are asked to practice waste minimization techniques and to hold bulky wasteat home; the public and all haulers are asked to hold waste until normal operating hoursresume. The Authority will continue to provide updates that may affect public health, theenvironment and haulers utilizing the Transfer Station.

 

 

It is recommended that residents with respiratory disorders/conditions shelter in place tominimize exposure to smoke as wind directions change.
